I have a 82 DT85 Suzuki I bought it last fall. it runs ok. here is the question how would I know about carbon build up and do these products help clean it out or prevent it from forming? just wondering.
thanks Doug

Ringfree was developed for Yamaha specifically to address carbon prevention and removal(at higher dosages) and is widely used and accepted. Seafoam was developed many decades ago to help prevent carbon and to help stabilize fuels and is widely used and accepted. I use the Ringfree for carbon prevention and a product called Stabil to stabilize fuel(prevent break-down/deterioration) while in the tank and fuel system. I believe you really need both products in your fuel, but there's plenty of thoughts, opinions and ideas on this subject.

I've used Seafoam religiously for the last dozen years or so to bring countless old outboards back to life and keep them there. Can't say I've ever tried them as an acute carbon tratment but I've heard it done. IMHO, Seafoam coupled with synthetic oil is the closest thing to the fountain of youth for outboards as there will ever be.

Good advice here I think. If you read the ingredient package in the MSDS you will see there is not that much to seafoam. Can't comment on the yamaha product as I know nothing about it. I have had NO ethanol fuel issues and religiously use Stabil Marine. With the long hours trolling while fishing for salmon my plugs don't carbon up either, but then my motor is oil injected and isn't subject to mixed gas either. My 2cents

If you go to: Outboard Fuel Additives, there's a lot of information about the available additives and their ingredients....many contain petroleum naphtha and methanol, a few other ingredients. The Ringfree was developed for Yamaha by Oronite Additives Div. of Chevron...same guys that make Techron....

I also use both Ringfree and Stabil,Certainly helps clean inside your motor. Ringfree is a bit expensive but it will help your motor last..
