Fuel comes out carb when choked

I have a 1972 65 HP Evinrude and today I had the carb cover off and noticed that when I cranked it with the choke closed that fuel would come out of the number 2 carb throat. I released the choke and it cranked up and seemed to idle well.

Any thoughts as to why this happens?

Thanks!!

might be a slightly stuck float needle. could also just be holding the choke too long and flooding it.

Re: Fuel comes out carb when choked

The function of the chokes is to flood the motor. "Enrich" the mixture is a nicer word. So it is not surprising if some of the "enrichment" slops out. Especially if the motor is tilted a bit.

If it doesn't flood while pumping the primer bulb, and runs and idles well, it probably is fine. On the other hand, if it does flood while pumping the primer, you have a defective or dirty float valve.

EDIT: Can't help but wonder why you had the cover off and looking in there anyway??

Re: Fuel comes out carb when choked

I have had a problem where it idles fine in neutral or in gear, but when you open it up under load it bogs down. Several different posts had recommended spraying carb cleaner in each carb while idling and if the engine bogged down that cylinder was firing. Each bogged down. Compression is 140 on each cylinder (it was suspossedly rebuilt about 40 hours ago. Next I will look at the lower unit and insure that nothing is clogging the exhaust unless you have a better idea.

Thanks for the information.

If your exhaust is clogged, it will be the first one I've ever heard of. I suspect a clogged high speed jet on one or more of the carburetors. Your carb spray test is kind of meaningless because the high speed fuel circuits are separate from the idle circuits.

Re: Fuel comes out carb when choked

What happened is I had it at the lake and it was running good. I had to leave the lake for four days so I pulled the boat out of the lake and left it at the campsite while I went into town to take care of family. When I got back, I put it back in the lake and within 5 minutes it started bogging down and no acceleration even though it would be fine at an idle. Does this cold or hot.

Took it to an Evinrude mechanic and the first time he replaced a coil and the power pack. The second time he rebuilt the carbs and drilled idle relief in the exhaust. Still does the same thing. Hot or cold. Idles great in neutral or in gear. Revs up fine in neutral, but put it in gear and punch it and it bogs down and appears to dump fuel out the exhaust.

Any ideas.

I think you are flooding the engine, possibly because of a float valve sticking open in the carburetor.

You could also have a problem caused by the choke solenoid; how many purple wires does it have?

There are 2 purple wires. One has a white stripe and other has a yellow stripe. Also, when I release the choke switch, the three butterflies open up.

Re: Fuel comes out carb when choked

Many 1970's motors were built with a automatic choke feature that sometimes malfunctioned, especially when thermostats were not working properly.

The system used a temperature switch that activated the choke solenoid. The system was known to be somewhat erratic and was usually disconnected subject to OMC SB #1335, issued in 1974.

The correction was to connect both purple wires to the toggle switch.

I realize this is late, but the problem turned out to be the timer base. I just took the technician's word that the electrical was good and when I put a spark gap tester on each cylinder, number two was not sparking. Hooking an ohmmeter across the number two coil on the timer base showed an open. $200.00 later, the motor runs great.

Thanks for all the help and advice.
