Fuel coming out of carb when hand primed

Hi,

I have a 1985 Evinrude, 50 hp. Just got the boat and motor. Went to start for the first time, when I hand primed the ball on the gas take, fuel bubbled out of the carb. Does this happen when to much fuel has been primed and leakes out of one of the air intake holes? Or is it a larger problem? When we ran the engine, no fuel seemed to leak out of the carb. Please let me know your thoughts. This is my first boat... really excited about getting out on the water, but worried that this could be a larger issue. Thanks in advance for any advice you have.

Re: Fuel coming out of carb when hand primed

Usually if you have fuel coming out of the carb when you pump up the bulb, it is a float issue in the carb. It is either a mis-adjusted float, the float is damaged and not floating, or the seat is either damaged or gummed up. When you pump up the bulb, the carb fills with fuel to the point that the float raises up, pushing a needle up into the seat stopping the flow. When the motor is running and pulls fuel out of the bowl on the carb, the fuel level falls, opening the needle off the seat allowing more fuel in. If it is not closing because of one of the above issues, you can pump fuel into the carb throat since it is not being stopped.

Sounds like a carb rebuild might be in order.

Carb rebuild time without a doubt.
