Fuel Coming out of Carb

Need a little help here after this weekend of fishing.

I have a 1986 Merc 35 power tilt/trim

Engine starts great, runs great, etc.

When stopped this weekend, there was a visable oil/gas trail on the water. Not really there while moving, but once the engine died, a big spot would form. Seemed the engine used more gas this weekend.

After getting home to look at it, while on muffs, no detectable leak. Once I shut the engine off, gas would come back out of the carb and would drip, drip, drip, etc.

Engine starts immediately, runs smooth, etc.

Thanks

Re: Fuel Coming out of Carb

Kelton ,I may be wrong but it sounds like it could be a sticky float valve or float set too high.

Sounds like float is sticking. You could try gently tapping where the fuel line goes in,
probably wont work.Could be dirt in float valve
float may not be floating. Probably will need a rebuild.

what should I expect a rebuild to cost or can I do this myself?

Hi, KeltonKrew.

You can do it yourself with the manual and carb overhaul kit that will cost less than the wrench's bill.

Then you will have the manual for next time you need to save yourself more bux.

Good luck. :)

Re: Fuel Coming out of Carb

I really did it good this time. Took off carb, cleaned out, put pieces aside as they came out, etc. put back together with new parts, adjusted the float per the manual (or so I thought)re-installed everything and went to start it.

no start, now 5 times the amount of fuel coming out of carb. I can turn the idle/fuel mixture screw almost all the way in and will start but not run too good so I stopped it.

question. on the butterfly valve inside the carb, should it be closed or open in the idle position?

Guess I'll take off tomorrow and try to figure out what is wrong!

I'll spend another couple of hours and if no go, guess I'll have to pay the wrench to fix me up. I can do most mechaical things, but carbs I've never messed with - now I know why :D

Did you replace the needle and seat?

yes. I replaced everything. (I guess you're referring to the float seat/needle). I also replaced all gaskets, float, idle adjustment screw, etc. It has to be something with the float/adjustment, I just can't figure it out!

Kelton
I don't know how good your diagram is, so I thought this link may help. Not sure of your serial number either, so I hope this is close to what you have. I believe you are going to find your problem is to do with the floats. I would concentrate on that first.

web page

Thanks rickdboat1,

that's the diagram I had in conjunction with my manual. Both show part #7, but when I took it apart #7 was not there. That is the only thing I added. It might just be the float adjustment (having to bend the tabs for the right clearance.)
I wil try again tomorrow. thanks for the help and the link!

Re: Fuel Coming out of Carb

check the float, if it is kinda like a white-ish brown plastic, replace it they get hair line cracks and then they are sinkers the new ones are black nitrile foam. obtw those carbs are know as floodomatics.very easy to unseat the needle valve if everything is not correct hope this helps. :)
