we have a 1977 mecury 40 hp 402 engine, engine starts up fine runs for 1 minit then dies starts up again but only way to keep it going is to flutter the choke we rebuilt the fuel pump checked the squeeze ball, squeeze ball will not get hard, when it is squeezed fuel is pushed thru the carberator and comes out the thoat i asume it is ether a stuck float or its needing a carb rebuild

My eyes hurt. ;)

Gas coming out from squeezng the bulb isn't unusual. It's easy to overpower the float valves on those carbs. It also shows that the carb is getting gas into it. Your other symptom sounds more like a float valve stuck shut and we know that's not the case. So the other logical explanation is a jet blockage, probably from varnishing. The carb is going to need to come off for a good cleaning.

Re: Fuel Coming Out Of mercury Carb

I have the same motor, and the same problem. The fuel starts running out the carb through the throthle shaft, after a few minutes. Ater i stop the motor, the fuel keeps running for about 1 minute before the dripping stops. The carb has been cleaned, the flotter-needle been replaced, but no results. Another problem is that the motor does not run idle. I need to keep the throtle open a bit. This might be causing the fuel problem... I don't know anymore, tried everything...

get a manual for reference.

i use gumout brand, but any carb cleaner will probably work.

take it ALL apart. take off all gaskets, o rings and anything that is not metal. soak all metal including jets in carb cleaner over night. blow all out with compressed air. put it back together with a manual and new gaskets, inlet needle and float if there is any sign of a crack(mine had a really small crack)
