Fuel delivery problem after installing a new water fuel separator

My 1989 3.0 OMC cobra drive inboard will not run after putting a new water/fuel separator on it. It runs perfectly when I bypass the water fuel separator. Any ideas of what the problem could be would be very much appreciated. Thanks

Did you install it between the pump and the tank?

Yes, I just replaced the old filter (the filter holder was already there) and yes it is installed between the pump and the tank

OK. You just replaced the element with a new one. Did you prefill it with gasoline before trying to start your engine? I have had a lot of trouble getting an engine to run unless I do that.

Yes we did that as well. We also filled the gas lines before and after the fuel pump with gas before attaching to new filter. We then cranked it and it tried to run until it used all the gas up. We then took the new filter off again and it was dry. We then bypassed the filter again it and it runs without a problem. Really weird.

Sounds like there is an air leak. Did the gasket of the old filter get stuck on the housing?

We have decided that an air leak is about the only possibility---I am going to get a fuel pressure gauge and see if I can track a leak down. I will check and make sure the old gasket is on the old filter, but if I remember correctly it was there. I appreciate all your input on this.

Screw your old filter on........ Does the motor run? If yes then there is a manufacturing booboo with that one element, take it back where you purchased it and exchange it.............stuff like that happens more and more with so many items made were labor is cheap.......

Wrong filter.

I would just get a new filter. Don't put the old filter on if you don't want crap going up to your carb.

What filters are you using? Brand and part number?

I just found it. The brand name is Marpac pn#7-0860. You really think the filter could be bad?
