i have a 84 mercury 90 hp. it does not start well. we have spark. we rebuilt the lower carb and the fuel pump put a fuel filter in but still wont start. can get it to start with starter fluid sometimes but not always. my question is when you push the key in to activate the enricher should there be fuel coming out of the carb somewhere that i could see it? when you push the key in i can hear a click but cant see any gas anywhere.

It dosnt work like that, the plunger on the enricher solenoid moves out and a soft rubber tip covers a hole in the side of the carb, when the motor is cranking it draws in more fuel.

Those older Mercs are cold natured. Turn the key on, push the choke in and hold it in while counting to 10 slowly. Then start the motor and continue to bump the choke as needed until the motor is running smoothly. If you want to check the enrichner take to output hose loose from the carbs and put the end of it in a container. Turn the key on a push it in. If working properly fuel will pulse out. Not a steady stream.

Holding the choke button and counting to 10 will accomplish pretty much nothing. With a choke carb the plates will close over the throat of the carb but if its not turning over nothing will get "choked".
