93 Johnson 70 hp 3 cyl. Previous owners employee couldn't start it,thought it might be the fuel filter so took it out. He also didn't use any water but thankfully it never started for him. I watched a YouTube video on cleaning and rebuilding the carbs on this motor and he said put a filter after the fuel pump so that's what I did. The VRO on this motor was taken out so the pictures in the shop manual where no help. After my clean and rebuild of the carbs along with a new fuel filter I gave it a go and it started right up for me and ran good. Later I started seeing other makes and models of different engines with the fuel filter before the fuel pump. So I'm here now to find out for sure where it's suppose to be and why? Thanks.

The filter goes before the pump otherwise the dirt or whatever will get into the pump.

If water is the concern (permanent tanks, mostly), may want to get a water separating filter (Racor or similar).

If you surf out to the factory parts lists and check out the fuel system exploded parts diagram for your exact engine, you can see the fuel filter prior to the VRO. Check out this website: epc.brp.com
