I have the long sought after 165 4cylinder, and want to add a fuel filter/water separator as we seem to run into fuel issues almost every year. The $40 seems well worth the investment for my sanity.

That said, I'm trying to figure out where I can put it within the engine compartment. I'd be great to attach it to the doghouse, but since that's removable, it's definitely not ideal. How far from the fuel pump (mechanically driven off the cam) can I put it without seeing any issues?

Depends on the fuel flow reguired, diameter of hose and pressure drop through the filter.

Mine is probably 6 feet or so away

usually the fuel filter goes between the tank and the fuel pump

normally its mounted to the motor or the stringer near the motor.
