Fuel filter question

I have an 85hp 1985 Force outboard.

I was restoring the rest of the boat, so I removed the motor and it has been sitting in the garage for 2 years.

Long story short, I lost the metal screen filter element that used to be where the fuel line hooks to the block.

Can I use a regular automotive style fuel filter, like a "G2", inline, right before it enters the block?

I don't see why not. I have installed secondary inline filter between fuel pump and carbs. It works great and now I can visually inspect fuel flow.

I got mine at WestMarine store for $6 and it has wire mesh and what looks like fiber core. I would double check that filter to make sure it can tolerate 2 stroke fuel/oil premix.

No problem and you should install two. One between the tank and the fuel pump and one between the fuel pump and the carbs. The second one keeps the carb passages clean when the fuel diaphram deteriorates.
