Fuel filter water separator question

I just installed a 16 gallon on-board permanent tank on my pontoon boat. Always before I used 2 six gallon Attwood tanks. The engine is a 1984 50 hp Merc and it runs good. However, there was usually some crap left in the tanks which I always dumped out before re-filling.

With this larger tank I won't be able to do that (dump crud) so I guess I need to install a replaceable filter. My son has a Mercury with a water separating fuel filter (Mercury part # 35-802893T).Does this one filter the fuel AND separate the water? I want to do both.

I need some advice on what to do here. Do I need two separate filters or does that one do both.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Don't know the specifics on that Merc part. In general, the water seperator/filter should be placed as soon after the tank as possible. A good practice is to put a cheap inline filter just before the carb/s to protect from disentegrating hoses, primer bulb etc.

Re: Fuel filter water separator question

The Walmart/Attwood fuel/water separator($27) works fine to keep water and trash out of your carbs, I unscrew my canister now and then and dump out any water or trash, screw it back on and good to go, or you can replace the canister for about $8. Your motor probably has a small filter/screen under the cowling and just as well to leave that one in place as a back-up filter. It's still a good idea to add a fuel stabilizer like Stabil or Seafoam just to be on the safe side, and especially since you have the built-in tanks now and dumping tanks wouldn't be feasible. Good Luck!:)

Can't do no better than that. Maybe carry a spare...you know...just in case!
