FUEL FILTER/WATER SEPERATOR LOCATION

i was wondering if it matters if i install the fuel filter water seperator at any location in the engine compartment ? or does it have to be a set distance from the gas tank and height with the fuel pump?/OR GAS TANK the boat is a 23ft wellcraft 454bb 7.4L ......THANKS
