Re: Fuel Filter/water Seperator Stuck

If you cannot get a strap type or other filter type of wrench in there with the amount of leverage needed, you'll need to remove the whole mess and put it in a vise with a "snipe" (piece of pipe or other thing to give you more leverage) on the filter wrench to break it loose.

If you break the filter mount, you'll need to get another one. Don't put the next filter on quite so tight and lubricate the O-ring next time too.

Secure one of these at the top of the filter and wind it up in the off direction.

This one is from McMaster-Carr

but I think you can find them at the auto parts stores too.

Re: Fuel Filter/water Seperator Stuck

Thanks for the suggestion, I bought the boat so I didn't install the last fuel filter. Nothing works and it is stuck. I don't know what you mean by remove the whole mess, I can't remove the engine or anything. This is so frustrating. I really can't afford to pay someone to do this. Any other ideas are welcome.

Re: Fuel Filter/water Seperator Stuck

I had one that was tight to get off as well. I used a strap wrench that I bought at a local auto parts store, they also have a filter wrench that grabs the filter like a pair of pliers. If you are going to replace you can always drive a screw driver thru the filter at the top and use this to turn it. But needs to be the last resort.

I also loosened the fuel supply hose going to the fuel pump and moved it out of the way to give me room to turn the wrench.

good luck.

Thanks guys I am a girl so it could be lack of strength. But Hot damn! I do this stuff all the time and it has never been stuck like this. the boat owners before me must have glued it in there.

Best bet would be the pliers then.

If you can some how get an extension on the end of the wrench, pliers that will over come your strength problem.

Nah....you can do it!

A "snipe" is just a piece of pipe or other longer wrench that gives you more leverage.

"The whole mess" is the filter mounting bracket. You may have to (disconnect the hoses) remove it and put it in a vise outside of the boat to get better leverage instead of having to be cramped in a tight engine compartment.

Having said that you should also be able to use a longer (ratchet) extension with that tool illustrated above to get more leverage to turn it (you are turning it in the right direction:eek:?......."righty-tighty"-----"lefty-loosey":p -----looking at the filter from the BOTTOM of the filter?.....I've been doing this for years and I still have to think about it sometimes when looking at it from the wrong angle!!;))

Use a torch! ........... JUST KIDDING!!! A strap wrench should, or sounds like the best option next to removing the whole thing and vise it off. There certainly is a tool for everything!
