I was looking for a fuel filter with a SS mount that has a visible drain like (Mallory for outboards) for my V6 Mercruiser. It seems they only make them with a cast bowl without the visible drain bowl. Does anyone know why, or if, I can use these visible bowl types that say Outboard only? What could be the big deal when there both designed to work with big 4 strokes?

That clear plastic bowl will not pass the fire tests for being mounted in an engine compartment.

That would defeat my purpose I want to be able to look back and see if I have water in my fuel before I'm 15 miles from shore.

It doesn't matter where you put it in the boat, if it's an inboard engine it MUST have a metal bowl.

If you have a fire on board, that's the first thing the fire investigators look for... If they find a plastic bowl, you could face criminal charges, especially if someone has been injured. It's just not worth the risk.

I can't fix winter we just get too much condensation in our metal tanks up here in the north. Is the metal bowl easy to check for water? Does it even have a easy drain to remove it like the see thru ones?

Ayuh,.... Yer not the only 1 livin' in the far cold North,....

Filters can be bought with the drain in the bottom, or not....

Myself, at 1st sign of water in the fuel, I Replace the filter, 'n check the contents of the old 1 for water...
