What causes the fuel gauge to flip from empty to "current level"?
Out at the lake yesterday, I noticed that the fuel gauge was bouncing from empty to 3/4 over and over again. And I also noticed that unless RPM's were up, the gauge tended to actually stay on the empty side of the bounce longer than the level side.
Is that a sending unit issue? I've checked that it's grounded good. And it is. The gauge is also grounded good.

I've searched here, but I haven't seen anything about surging / bouncing gauges. Not sure what the proper term to search on either though...

Suggestions?

Thanks!

How old is the sending unit? The float might be cracked/bad.

BTW: This is my 400th post.....that means I now know everything about boats/motors, correct?

I honestly don't know. I would assume that it's original to the boat. 1984.... I've only owned this boat a short time now.

Re: fuel gauge fluctuates.

The issue has nothing to do with the engine so posting in the engine forum is the wrong place and also the wrong place to search. "Fuel Gauge Problem" would be the term to use when searching. It is also the term used in the sticky at the top of the "electrical forum" as that example shows you how to use the search feature. There are over 100 fuel gauge problem posts in the electrical forum - many of them have troubleshooting and diagrams. But the long and short of this is that you likely have a loose connection either at the sender or the gauge.

I have owned many boats and most fuel gauges just do not work like you think they should.

My apologies for the wrong section... I search here because that's where I've been having 99% of my research take place because of the engine swap.

And thank you...I will definitely look there.
