Fuel gauge grounding

Is it necessary to have a ground wire to a metal fuel tank for the sender to operate or is the ground from terminal on the sender to the gauge enough?

Ayuh,... The tank itself should be bonded to the motor's block...

The tank itself should be bonded to ground for safety reasons.You can daisy chain another wire for the ground lug on the sender.

Why would you run a wire all the way from the fuel sender to the gauge? Ground is wherever you find it but since the fuel sender is just a couple of feet from the battery, connect to the negative terminal of the battery. Ground on the guage can be connected to the ground terminal on any other gauge or to the ground buss at the helm. Ground for the fuel sender is the metal outer ring of the sender. The wire connects to a tab on that ring or under one of the mounting screws. Metal fuel tanks should also be grounded.

The tank is aluminum and is located at the front of the boat and sits on a wood platform. The ground terminal on the sender is grounded at the gauge ground terminal but I am thinking that the tank itself is not grounded.

So Bond-O I am thinking you are saying I should run a ground wire from the main ground wire to the tank itself.
