Fuel Gauge Issues

Hello All,

I am a new boat owner having just purchased a used Winner 1850 CC. The fuel gauge in my boat works but it is not accurate. I have a 36 (or maybe 42) gallon tank. The gauge read less than 1/4 yet took only 12 gallons when I filled it (and overflowed!).

Is this something I should just learn to live with or is there a quick/simple solution?

Thanks

Re: Fuel Gauge Issues

There is a way to ground wires from the sender to check to see if it is the gauge or the sender. I am not sure of this process but use the search function. A post was just started this last week about it.

Re: Fuel Gauge Issues

There are two wires on the top of the fuel sending unit (pink & black--usually). With the key in the 'on' position, remove the black wire, which is normally on a spade terminal, and touch it to the pink wire. If the gauge is good, it will peg to full.

Chances are good that the gauge is fine and the problem lies in your sending unit. If there is gunk or varnish on the sending unit, it won't allow it to run it's full range of motion, thereby giving an errant reading.

Remove the sending unit and turn the key back on. Run it through it's full range and see if the gauge corresponds accordingly. If not, get a new sending unit.

Re: Fuel Gauge Issues

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try this weekend.
