fuel gauge problem

My son accidentally reversed the connections on the battery of his boat. After that the fuel gauge would not register. Does that burn out the sending unit or the gauge itself. What kind of a ohm reading should I try. I see gauges in catalogs priced at about $29. When you buy a new gauge do they include the sending device that goes in the tank? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: fuel gauge problem

Mostly, the fuel gauge you buy will be just that. The fuel guage only. As far as the sending unit burning up, I'm not sure. I'd probally check the wiring and make sure all is up to snuff and you probally could check the resistance through the sending unit. Also if possible, can you see if the float in the tank that is on the unit maybe got stuck. Most of the sending units that I have seen are fairly easy to take out. Just a suggestion. Hope this helps.

Makky - If the tank is built in there should be a manufacturer's ID plate on it with phone #. If so call them and get the info on the sender. There are "gereric" senders but I would be much more comfortable with the accuracy of the sender if it were one designed for your tank.
