My fuel gauge quit working, it is a 70 gallon tank on the floor, it was showing empty, and we put 30 gallons in it and didnt move, i hit the top of tank and it moved to 1/4 tank and has not moved. any ideas on where to start???? any thought would be helpfull. It is on a 96 fish cuddy proline. fiberglass floor with 2 access hatches one for tag and the other has a round plate about 2 or 3 inches with 2 or 3 wires comming out.

Re: Fuel Gauge

Checking connections is always the first step. Since the gauge itself seems to respond to the ignition key (it actually registers something), that says it is probably ok. So -- make sure you have a good ground and +12V connection on the gauge. Then remove and clean the terminals on the sender. If it still doesn't work, pull the sender and measure the resistance. Full (arm full up) it should register 33 ohms give or take a little. Empty (arm full down) it should measure 240 ohms give or take a little. Keep in mind that at the very extreme ends of travel, the resistance may go whacky as the moveable slider in the rheostat goes off the end of the resistor. You generally can't fix the senders so install a new one. They are not budget busters.
