Can you take a resistance reading across the fuel tank sender unit to tell what type of gauge you should use or would I have to remove the sender to do this?

While looking at some Faria gauges they have two different types. One has a range of 10-180 ohms and the other is 240-33 ohms.

This is on my 1987 ProLine 21 WAC.

Re: Fuel Gauge

The one you want is 33 -240 ohms provided you have a U.S. built vessel. The other is in general use internationally. You can disconnect the wire (usually pink) from the sender and then measure resistance from the now empty terminal to the metal shell of the sender. Depending on how much fuel you have in the tank will determine what the reading will be. 109 ohms is approximately 1/2 full. You can do the math from there.

Re: Fuel Gauge

Thanks Silvertip, my boat was made here in Crystal River. Thanks for the information. having close to a full tank my resistance should be at the top end. Thanks again.

Re: Fuel Gauge

Nope -- full tank = 33 ohms. Less resistance causes the gauge to read higher (full).
