Fuel Gauge

I recently installed a new sending unit for the gasoline gauge on my boat. Before installing the new unit, the needle on the gauge would move in a negative direction slightly when the switch was engaged. The new sending unit is not the same make or model as the original. With the new unit, the needle swings sharply to the full position even though the tank is only about 1/3 full. Will I need to replace the actual gauge with one that is made for this particular sending unit or could something else be wrong? The old sending unit was definitely bad because the metal contact on the wing was damaged and was not making contact with the rheostat.

Re: Fuel Gauge

smcintosh
Can you take the sending unit out of the tank
then measure the distance from the top of the tank
where the unit sits and the bottom of the tank.
(say 12 inches) then set the sending unit on the
edge of a bucket (or whatever) so the float has
about same traveling distance to the floor. Then
watch the gauge while you move the float up and
down. And adjust it accordingly. Might have to extend the wire to hook it up.

Now I've never done this but am going to have to
do this in a month or so and thats what I figured
I would try.

If anyone has a better idea mabe they will save
me some time down the road also. I have two tanks on a truck and one boat to replace sending
units on.

Going to follow this to see how wrong I might
be.

Link

Re: Fuel Gauge

Hey maybe you can help me out. I have an 85 Winner Bass Boat, am having problem with fuel gauge, when wired it toggles back and forth quickly figure there is a short or something. Does anyone have a wireing diagram or picture can help me with or tell me how to re-wire, bought the boat used and am sure some of wire is missing.
