I have been reading alot of different opinions on the best / worst grades of fuel to use in my motors. I recently aquired a '55 Johnson & a '63 Evinrude. Which octane is better for these old 2-strokers. Appreciate any advice!

Re: Fuel grade

87 octane fuel mixed at 50:1 with TCW3 oil on the 55hp engine.Same 87 octane in the 63' model you mention ,however I'm reluctant to mention the proper mix without first verifying the model number and hp for accurate year model. Before ,I believe 64' many of the engines were mixed at 24:1 ratio.See if you can post some model numbers of each.

In summary,If you are already surely aware of the mix ratios for each ,the 87 octane unleaded gasoline is what is recommended for your engines.

ob,
I think he has a 1955 Johnson rather than a 55 hp Johnson. With that engine, the ratio should be 24:1, 87 octane to TCW-3 outboard oil.

Re: Fuel grade

Sorry about that, it is a 1955 Johnson 5 1/2 HP Seahorse and a 1963 Evinrude 18 HP Fastwin. The reason for my confusion on the fuel grade stems from this Master Tech web sight on gasoline, read this and tell me what you think, Thanks for the help Gents!
maxrules.com/fixgas.html

That's what I get for assuming. Thanks for the heads up on that BoatBuoy.I was indeed assuming a 55 hp engine.Another good reason for supplying model numbers and engine specifics. :)

Re: Fuel grade

I've had a lot of trouble with the additives they put in 91 and 93 melting down the rubber parts in older outboards. Fuel lines, carb bowl gasket, floats, fuel pump diaphrams - you name it.

Here we have the consensus of many opinions, both professional and amature. I think it's far more reliable than one man's opinion.
