My late 70s mercury 20hp thunderbolt wont stay running. I prime, pull choke and it starts up. Push in choke and after 20 seconds it starts running faster and then chokes out. If i keep squeezing the ball then it will keep running. Carb was cleaned. Lines checked for air leaks. I suspect the float bowl isnt filling fast enough? Theres 2 screw type jet adjustment things, anything to do with spinning them? Help me out here guys, the bay is calling for me.

When you operate the ball you are now the fuel pump.----Therefor you need to find and repair the pump on the motor !

Thanks for your intrest racerone, means alot to me. The pump seemed likely to me. Is there a chance that the float isnt working right causing a small amount of fuel to trickle in? The priming ball doesnt stay hard after it runs but if pumped it stays hard for a few hours.

The priming ball is a manual fuel pump.---There is absolutely no reason for it to be hard once the motor has started.---It has done it's job.
