I started a thread comparing a 4.3L MPI to a 5.0L carbed. Through all the responses as well as some outside info we decided that for our next (1st) boat, we need fuel injection. So my search is narrowed.
It all started with the opportunity to buy a new 20' Bayliner BR with a 4.3L MPI, and continued because we couldn't decide if the engine was enough for the boat...i mean...our uses of the boat. Heres my new question.

Obviously a 5.0 Inj. is bigger and more powerful than a 4.3 Inj. At what point is a 4.3L not enough, and you need that extra 40 HP that comes from a V8?

We will be buying a 19-21 ft bowrider (our price range puts our boat in the 'used' category, and unfortunately lowers our choices to what we can find in our area, AZ), regardless of brand. Our primary use will be water sports, ie skiing, wakeboarding, slaloming, tubing. But we will also do some cruising and basic all-around activities with between 4-8 ppl onboard. We are having an EXTREMELY difficult time narrowing down our engine options. But have gotten it to these two choices. Will a fuel injected 4.3L do the trick for us? Opinions??

19-21' boat with 8 people aboard trying to ski, wakeboard, etc?

No way will a 4.3 get that job done.

If you can afford the 5.0 then you should get it. There are a lot of boats out there, so you will be able to find what you want.

Get the biggest engine you can find. Fuel usage will be one of the minor expenditures on your boat. A 4.3L will average 7-8 gallons/hour, an 8.1L will average 8-10 GPH. The 5.0L and 5.7L fall in between. If you put 50 hours/year or so on your boat like most people then the extra fuel cost will be $200 or so for the biggest engine you can find. If you are scraping so tight that $200/year is that important to you, you may want to reconsider buying a boat.

You'll find that a 22' boat with a 4.3L is about impossible to find. That should tell you that it would be pretty marginal in the 19-21' range, especially if you want to load it up and pull skiers and tubers.

The funny thing about boats is.....
...... Nobody complains when they have to much power.
