Fuel issue

So I took my boat out yesterday and halfway through my trip I noticed the the boat had drank about 10 gallons of fuel, and I didn't go that far, maybe two miles. I run a 90HP Johnson. Anyway, started the return trip and after going through a little bit of chop, the engine started surging in the flat water. As soon as I pulled back on the throttle the engine quit. I sat for a few minutes and fired her back up without incident and slowly took the boat home. A few times along the way home the engine was surging again. I made it back to the ramp and realized I had gone through half a tank of gas in such a short trip. So I am wondering where to start looking. I would appreciate any help.
Thanks

Re: Fuel issue

Usually high fuel consumption is from a cylinder not firing. Losing one cylinder out of four will cut your mileage in half almost and rpms will be down 800-1000.

Re: Fuel issue

using 10 gallons in 2 miles is alot..it would have to be spitting raw gas out....and see a slick on the water....you sure your gas guage is correct....that the float in the sending unit is not soaked thru

Re: Fuel issue

Gauge was working fine last week, wasn't burning half the amount of gas in the same trip. And of course the stalling has me worried. Would dirty carbs or clogged water separator cause excessive fuel consumption?

Re: Fuel issue

I just pulled the water separator and drained it into a jar, the color of the gas has a green tint to it, is that normal? I am letting it settle now to see if there was water in it.
