Hey guys I have a 1993 30hp Johnson 2stroke. I start it up and it dies. I thought it might be the fuel pump so i pulled it apart to check for debris. Found nothing but now I forgot where the round gasket with the holes go. Does anyone have a blown up diagram of how they go together? to make sure im doing this right? Also I think Ive narrowed it down to the carb probably needs to be rebuilt. Crank it up and unlse im choking it it dies right away. it does have a Choke solenoid? I believe thats what its called with the red dial on it.

Sorry man, I wasn't able to find a parts breakdown when I was in a similar situation. You can buy a brand new one for relatively cheaply at least. You have to be really careful when you take it apart so you remember how it all goes back together!

fuel delivery problem. start at the tank and work forward to the carb throat.

I agree with scurvy... Sounds like a fuel delivery issue. The primer solenoid is designed to add additional fuel for cold starts, it's not a true choke. That said it sounds like it's not getting enough fuel. Check the fuel lines, primer bulb & carbs for leaks.

Re: Fuel issues. 93 30hp johnson Please help

Just put a new primer bulb on it no change. I did find a couple things while looking around at it. Theres a hose that starts behind the fuel pump and goes somewhere but its not hooked up. Also theres a hose nipple on the intake manifold just below the carb that has no hose on it. Anyone know where these go so i can put them back? Im waiting for a new fuel pump to get here but i went ahead and pulled the carb off and was going to clean and possibly do a rebuild kit on it. any advice on how to do the rebuild ? or is it pretty easy

I believe that the missing connection is the pulse line for the fuel pump. The line runs from the intake manifold to the back of the fuel pump and provided the vacuum pulse to run the pump.

Could you provide a model number?

The hose nipple on the intake might be for the enricher.

I believe the hose attached to the top of the head is the tell-tale. It would be routed out of the cowling or base plate to show that the cooling system is pumping water.

the nipple on the manifold is (I believe) for the enricher.

Its not the tell tale unlse theres two of them. The tell tale on this motor is coming from the other side and down. this is coming from behind the fuel pump it was just laying there not hooked up to anything. I got the motor to run just its misfiring a little bit. But no water comes out of that hose

yes it is. The only connections on that cover are for the fuel pump. 1 pulse hole and 2 pump mounting holes.

The only thing I can think of is if someone had modified the bypass cover to use a different fuel pump and added a nipple to the bypass cover to pulse the pump since the one they had used didn't get pulse through the back. Are you the original owner?

No I bought the boat probably 4 months ago. So the pulse hose is the one that connects to the front of the fuel pump the part the has a screen filter in it right? If so that is hooked up so I'll probably just zip tie this one shut, Do you see a problem with doing that? because of right now its not hooked up to anything just laying there or just leave it alone?

no the front of the pump with the screen is the fuel intake. The pulse line connects on the bottom left. see diagram at following link:

Johnson Fuel Pump Parts for 1993 30hp VJ30ELETA Outboard Motor

If you pump doesn't get its vacuum pulse through the back, then the hose coming of the bypass cover is the pulse line to power the pump. fuel in through the front (with the screen). Pulse line bottom left, fuel out bottom right.

You can check that everything is correct by blowing air (with your mouth) into the fuel in line - air should flow through the pump and out the fuel out line. Then attempt to blow air through the fuel out - it should not allow you to blow air through the pump, but sucking air would work. the pulse line will neither allow you to suck or blow much. DO NOT put compressed air into the pulse line (or any of those lines for that matter).

The fuel in line connects to the fuel connector on the motor. The fuel out line connects to the carb inlet. The pulse line connects to the bypass cover.

I will take some pictures of it today after work. because that pulse line is hooked up on the pump to the bypass.
