Fuel Leak

Hello Everyone,<br /><br />I'm the new owner of a 1994 70 hp Force outboard. I noticed a fuel leak that is soaking the engine and inside of the cowling. It is coming from all three small covers? behind the fuel pump. One of the covers was actually loose and missing 2 bolts. I removed it and there is no gasket present. Question #1-What are these 3 covered areas? Question #2- I was getting lower than normal compression readings. Would this affect compression? Thanks in advance.

Re: Fuel Leak

Sounds like you may need to replace the fuel pump diaphrams. It could effect the compression if the diaprams are deteriorated or missing as well as the engines ability to get a proper flow of fuel. Check here for fuel pump assembly view: mercruiserparts.com/Show_Pictures3.asp?dnbr=823089&ivar=images/FORCE/823089/27.png&inbr=1460&bnbr=15&bdesc=FUEL+PUMP+ASSEMBLY and here to find those parts you may need to fix the fuel pump. http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfinder/*******.601407269&**********=391631534

"It is coming from all three small covers? behind the fuel pump."<br /><br />The covers that are about the same size as the fuel pump?<br />1 above, 1 below, and 1 behind the fuel pump?<br /><br />Number 9 in the picture below?<br /><br /><br />

<br /><br />These are the transfer port covers.<br /><br />Yes, there should be a gasket.<br />Yes, it will reduce compression.<br />Yes, get gaskets and replace the missing screws.<br /><br />Should be able to get what you need from a Mercury dealer.<br />May have to cut your own gaskets if they are no longer available.<br />Might as well spend the extra $14 and do the fuel pump diaphram and gaskets.

Re: Fuel Leak

Thank you for the quick response. Gaskets are ordered along with a new fuel filter and should be here today. Does anyone know the torque specs. for these gaskets? I have a service manual on order but it won't be here for a while. One more quick question-I found a black plastic part in the bottom of the engine below the fuel pump. It resembles a short popsicle stick and has 4 holes in it. Looks like a spacer of some kind. Any ideas as to what it is and where it should go? I think previous owner was good at taking things apart...not so good at putting them back together! Thanks again.

<br /><br />If you order up the fuel pump kit from Mercury, you will get all the part needed to rebuild the pump.<br />Probably a good idea since he has taken it apart and atleast one part is missing. Mercury part number 21-857005A1
