Fuel Leak

I've got a '57 Evinrude that I've only had out a few times. The first couple it ran great - flawless for several hours the second time, with many restarts. Then the motor sat for about 2 weeks and at the next outing LOTS of gas started leaking from the carb (front) when priming.

The problem has been intermittent. Sometimes I can squeeze the bulb as hard as I want and it won't leak. This leads me to believe it is not a faulty seat, float valve or float adjustment. After seeing several posts related to old lines and ethanol, I'm starting to think that junk from an old fuel line might be preventing the valve from closing. Inspection of the spark plugs revealed a little loose gunk I haven't seen before (of course, there's a lot I haven't seen  so it might have been carbon/gas since it was just flooded).

So, if I'm right, what should I do after replacing the lines? Would you tear down the carb (I'm comfortable with that but would rather be fishing) or just try to run it for awhile and hope it flows out (saying that makes it sound dumb ). What about the cylinder, fuel filter, etc?

thanks

Re: Fuel Leak

actually have it all torn apart now (the carb) but it was coming out the front of the carb body into the silencer and running out between the silencer and cover.

I got the old lines off and cut them open. they were definitely dissolving.

carb leak shouldn't be a problem anymore but who knows what this gunk did to everything else...

after you put everything back together dont put the air silencer... i have one on mine not sure if you do.. try to start the motor and look at the carbs make sure they dont leak again.... once you have the covers on ill be tough to see or find leaks...

ad btw you were luck ive read stories before with fuel leaks that ended up in flames

Re: Fuel Leak

always been lucky, wonder when it will run out

i've tried leaving everything off but the leak generally doesn't reoccur unless i go WOT, and i don't have a test wheel, yet

i think doing that gets enough fuel flow to move the gunk around, and opens the valve enough to get some in the valve/seat again. of course, i'm guessing...

I might take the old fuel line and test to see if sea foam or carb cleaner will attack it faster than gas

if one does i'll (mix it with oil), get all the gas out, get it running on that for a couple seconds, shut it off, pull the plugs, dump some in there, replace them, let it sit for awhile, go back to the right gas mix, run it again and hope for the best

after that...
