97 Merc 5.7L 2bbl carb, mech. fuel pump

Just recently installed a new longblock in the boat. Used original fuel pump, carb and intake. Replaced fuel hose between tank and water separator with marine line because the old one was about an inch too short. Hose is now about 2' long.

If the boat sits for more than a couple of weeks, it has no gas. Cranking won't draw fuel to the motor. Only way to start it is to pour a small amount of fuel down the carb. Then it fires right up. Most of the time, that's sufficient to get fuel flowing, sometimes it takes a second priming.

To me this sounds like a check valve problem, but I would also think the fuel pump should be able to draw fuel through an empty line at engine cranking speeds.

Anyone have an idea as to where the actual problem would lie or should I start changing items until I find the problem?

SOme simple tests with a vacum gauge would find the problem. hook it to the fuel line by the siphon valve and see if your pump is pulling vacum. then with a clear hose see that fuel will pass the siphon valve freely. there might be some blockage in the bottom tank pick up as well.

Thanks for the reply.

There was a post mentioning, I think, Don S's fuel system testing checklist, but now I cannot seem to find it. Anybody have a reference?

Re: Fuel Leakdown

Easiest way to fix that is to install an outboard style fuel primer bulb in the fuel line between the tank and the filter. It doubles as an emergency fuel pump too.
Just pump it up in the morning and you're away. Too easy:D

Re: Fuel Leakdown

I've seen people do that before, but to me that is not a fix. That's called jury-rigging or one of a hundred other different names. As a quick fix, need to move the boat, maybe; but not for a long term solution. Besides, it's just as easy to pour fuel down the carb.

Thanks for the link Addiction.
