Fuel Line and tank for a 6 hp Johnson

Hi all,

I just did some trading and came up with a 6 hp Johnson (Model Number CD-25C) that I'd like to play with.

Previous owner replaced the water pump impeller and plugs recently and said it ran fine.

This weekend I picked up a 14' flat bottom boat (rated for 7 hp...perfect!) that I'll use the engine with.

I don't have a tank or fuel line yet, and that's what I wanted to ask about here. It looks like I can buy a pre-assembled line set, or the bulb and fittings and line and put my own together. I wondered what you all thought the pros and cons were to this. I'm the type that will spend WAY too much time saving a dollar (I'm frugal and handy). If I build it myself, what types of clamps have you had good luck with.

I'm also trying to decide if I should get a 3 gallon tank or a 6 gallon tank. How long will a 6 hp run on either? In your opinion...how handy is a gauge at this size (I'm guessing with a plastic tank, the gauge would be redundant/unnecessary).

Is there anything else I should know about before I start buying stuff? Like...is there anything special about this engine that I need to look out for when getting a tank or fuel line?

Oh...and I'll be getting a manual too.

Thanks for any input! I look forward to getting out on the Big Muddy (Missouri River) this season!

Go with a 3 gallon. That motor will run forever on it.

A 3 gallon tank will last a long time with that engine. Make sure that your new fuel line is ethanol compatible and you might want to change out the fuel lines under the cowl. If the lines are old they will breakdown if you run gasoline containing ethanol through them.

Thanks all!

I'll definitely inspect the under-cowl fuel line and replace if necessary (it probably will be).

I'm still interested in y'alls' take on "roll your own" or buy pre-assembled fuel lines.

Thanks!
