Re: Fuel line?

Ken, Marine fuel line is marked "BIA Certified". it is avail in a lot of places, like auto parts stores. Make sure you get OB fuel line, not I/O fuel line.

Just wondering why... Auto fuel line is subjected to harsher environments than any boat fuel line. My local boat shop wanted 5 bucks a foot for "marine fuel line". What is the real difference?

Re: Fuel line?

I am not sure of your question. Auto fuel lines are mostly steel with short rubber pieces to tank and engine. There is a specific difference between I/O line and OB line, although I am not sure what it is.

There is Always some rubber line connecting the steel ones. They are exposed to wet and dry, cold and hot, sunlight and darkness, and Salt spray. These hoses often last 50 years. They are under some 15-20psi fuel pressure. Granted they usually don't have oil added to the fuel. Oil should be less corrosive then the fuel. Modern fuel injection systems have high pressure systems that require special fuel lines.

So I repeat... What is so special about "Marine" fuel line?

Oh! I forgot to mention Rocks... bouncing off the road.

I'm talking about FUEL line. Neoprene hoses marked fuel line on them that have nylon fiber reinforcement. I recently saw some fuel line that appeared to be made of vinyl that I never knew existed.

I'm happy to replace if necessary in 20 years my 15' of auto fuel line.

Bending over to inflated prices for a name (certification) is not always required.

Re: Fuel line?

If I were replacing my boat's fuel lines, I would for sure "bite the bullet" and use the Yamaha approved Marine fuel line, regardless of price. With a marine engine, there will most likely be fuel additives, ethanols, and maybe 2 stroke lubricants, in the case of 2 strokes, that could eat up an automotive fuel hose. Just my opinion. Good Luck!

Re: Fuel line?

Personally I dont see the difference between marine and automotive fuel like. 2 stroke oil is just that, oil. I replaced my fuel line with regular old 3/8 for an auto and I have a 150 outboard. Ive had more trouble keeping my prime bulb and line from decaying than the fuel line. Each year my prime ball with start to crack or leak some where. I think its another one of the ford/chevy debates.

Re: Fuel line?

Marine fuel line is subjected to a higher testing criteria than auto line. If you have two of the same hoses in your hand you will notice the marine line is thicker and has more re-inforcement. Auto line will kink sooner for the same radius bend than marine line.

Plus it's for a boat. Everything foar a boat costs twice as much as auto. I'd suck it up and bu the good stuff. I'm sure the auto line will work fine for years but when it comes time to sell having everything proper shows that you have taken the time and effort to service the boat properly.

Re: Fuel line?

My Yamaha is a 1999 and it still has all the original Yamaha fuel lines on it with no deterioration at all, maybe it's the rubber or the UV protection, but it holds up really good. I use automotive fuel hose on my rail buggy and it dries and cracks and requires replacement every 2 or 3 years. Everything on a boat/motor is just pretty darn important, especially when you're 20 miles down the river and the weather is coming in on you! Roll the dice!

Also, in the Yamaha repair manual it warns specifically against using automotive hoses on the outboard motors. Again, roll the dice!

Re: Fuel line?

I could never accept "Because I said so" as an answer.
Fuel additives, more testing, kink ability, "they" warn against it???
you guys and your $20,000 dollar boats can pay all you want. LOL

Well...my boat was 1100 bucks but when i replaced all the fuel lines and fill and vent lines i bought marine rated from West Marine.
That and the fact it is stamped USCG approved on the fuel line.
If my boat ever causes a fire and damages someones property or boat my butt is covered..
It was only a couple more bucks a foot and they cut it to what you need.

I think your gullible if you think that can relieve liability. Firstly the fuel line will be destroyed, secondly you can't pass blame if a "certified" shop didn't do the work.;)

Re: Fuel line?

This link shows product info for fuel line I purchased @ $.98/ft (5/16) from my local auto parts store. SAE 30R7
http://www.gates.com/brochure.cfm?brochure=5079&location_id=5242

I'm happy with it. OK USCG types will handle more vacuum, But less pressure and have a narrower temperature range. This auto line is also rated for marine application. And the bend radius is tighter with type A

USCG Type A

USCG Type B
