Hi guys, got a 1977 evinrude,70hp that I replaced the complete hose from the tank to the motor. The old hose was soft and sometimes would kink and starve the engine of fuel. Put an aftermarket fuel
hose on and it ran good for a few weeks and started doing the same thing again. While on the water, changed back to the old fuel hose and it ran good for several weeks. Started having the same trouble again, went back to the new hose and its running good again. Do I have 2 bad hoses or is this a tank pickup problem? I know the carbs may need cleaning, but when I change the hose it makes such a improvement that it looks like the check valves or something is sticking.

Re: fuel line

Welcome to iboats. Yes. It could be water or debris in the tank, or carb bowls.
It could be an air leak in the hose or fittings, or even low compression, causing the fuel pump to malfunction, or the fuel pump.
Lots to look ,into I know. But it truely is a process of elimination. Be sure to install an inline fuel filter. These are available at any marina , but are cheaper at the nearby auto parts store (usually).
They come with easily changeable elements, which are also pretty cheap.

That would be a portable, 6gal, omc. I have 2 tanks on board and it happens with both. The fuel pump is about 2-3 years old. Are those portable tanks vented in any way?

Yes, there is a small knob on the top of the filler cap. It should be in the counterclockwise position(Open) for venting. It sounds from the running time that this may be your problem.

Re: fuel line

Rick, I just took a look at my tanks and there is no knob on either cap, or any kind off vent or opening that I can see. It is the same caps that have always been on the tanks. That reminds me that when I open the cap, some times there is a gush of air, don't know if its pressure or vacuum. Seems like it would have to vent some way.
