Just got this boat and motor, finally found the data plate on the motor mount.

Evinrude 65hp Sportfour
Model 65853B
Serial E06792

The best i can tell from a few websites is its a 1968 model? Anyone know what fuel/oil mix this should use?

Thanks!

Yep, 1968. 50:1, that's one pint of TC-W3 outboard oil to 6 gallons of regular unleaded gas.

1968 is the correct year for the model number.

50:1 87 or 89 US Octane to TC-W3 oil. You will get less plug fouling and carbon using synthetic TC-W3 oils, plus the 100% synthetic oils are often biodegradable.

The parts manuals are posted on-line

You can get general information like oil and maintenance schedules here:

Re: Fuel Mix? 65hp

Awesome! Thanks for the links too, going to be a big help! I have been trying to find a cheap manual for the motor, will keep an eye on eBay and see if anything turns up. I got a few questions on the motor as well, i should start another thread on here but that seems like a waste of space so i will add them here and hope you guys can help with this too!

I'm going to drain and refill the lower unit gear lube, i don't know when it was last done and its been sitting a few years so that doesn't help either, but thankfully it was inside a garage that whole time so it did help it survive a bit better. I got this figured out after reading some of the posts on here, found the drain screw and the upper screw. Unless there is any gotchas?

I'm confused on the water route on this motor, i don't have much outboard experience, newbie boat owner here so be kind if i ask something really stupid!

There is no openings on the right side of the motor, looking at it from the back, on the left side there is a long somewhat oblong shaped plate with a small screen in it, i assume this is the water intake? If so i don't see how i could get an earmuff over it since its too close to the flat piece above the prop, plane or whatever they call it, there just isn't enough room for one of those suction cup type earmuffs to go over it.

Also just above the prop there is an angled outlet that has two exits, one i believe is the exhaust because of the exhaust like residue in it, the other in front of that has a screen over it and i assume thats the water exit. I took a hose and put a gentle flow of water in the screen on the side on that plate and water came out of that screened hole by the exhaust, so it makes sense to be the water exit.

Now on the motor just below the power head, i think thats the right terminology, there is a round hole about 3/4" or so in diameter. What is this hole for? Is the the outlet for the water that circulates up through the engine for cooling?

I assume the only way i can run this one for testing is going to be in a water barrel? I need to clean the carbs and give it a tuneup yet, but i did have it running last year in a 55gal drum, for a little bit just to make sure the ignition worked on it, just took until this year to get it. It was a huge pain getting it into that barrel, one heavy old beast!

Re: Fuel Mix? 65hp

Both gearcase types used on your model have the primary water intake just above the propeller and under the anti-ventilation plate.

There is no real good way to run the motor except in a large bucket, barrel or similar container. When you do, remember that the water pump is not self-priming, so have the water level above the actual water pump and give the water time to reach the pump before starting the engine.

When the propeller is turning in forward gear, the water is forced into the intake, so it is much more effective in actual use.

Ok i see, so the screen forward of the exhaust is actually the intake.. got it!

So the plate on the side with the screen is for? It has something to do with water passage through the motor, i think someone once told me its the bypass??

Would that mean the motor has a thermostat and the water flows out the bypass until it opens, and once open the water then flows up through the motor and the out that hole on the back above the water line?

Re: Fuel Mix? 65hp

The water bypass cover on the side of the gearcase and above the a/v plate is a secondary water source, effective when in reverse, and allows venting for better water circulation.

OMC thermostats were mounted to open and close the flow of cooling water after it passed through the engine. Any water that did not flow through the engine was shunted to the exhaust housing and out with the exhaust or through the exhaust relief.

The thermostat housing on your motor is located just below the aft end of the engine and is shown in detail on the diagram labeled "exhaust tube group". Water hoses lead from the cylinder head to the housing.

Ahh ok, i found that diagram and know i understand. Time to get out the barrel and see if i can get it running now that i understand everything on it. I don't like running any piece of equipment until i understand stuff like this, call me cautious.

I don't have much boat/outboard experience, but i have lots of mechanical/electrical knowledge.
