Fuel mix question..

I was reading in my manual and it said during the break in period to use a 25:1 fuel/oil ratio. After the break in period (which is typically how long?) it said to use the standard 50:1. My question is this: My motor (73 Merc 850) has been sitting for 10 plus years. Should I consider using the 25:1 ratio to sort of "re-break" it in/re-lube the internal parts or just go with the standard 50:1? If using the 25:1 ratio isn't a bad idea, how long should I run the motor with that fuel mix?

Re: Fuel mix question..

I'd suggest you use fresh, 87 octace unleaded gas with a 50:1 mix of a good TWC3 oil.

Change any filters and the gear oil, look it over for obvious faults on all cables, hoses, tubes , links etc.

Replace the plugs and see if it will start and run at low rpm (do NOT forget plenty of cooling water/muffs). If you do not get a strong tell tale after a few seconds, replace the impeller.

Before taking it out I'd remove the prop and give the shaft a thin film of marine grease (the same as used on cables, links etc.) before refitting it.
