The correct recommended fuel mix ratio is 16:1, but that was made in 1951 when SAE 30 auto oil was used. With today's TCW-3 marine oil, you can probably lean it out to about 24:1 and not hurt anything. Running the original recommended 16:1 mix would be better though, using modern TCW-3.

Oil is the life blood of your motor don't mess with it.
Mix should be 16:1.You could go to The Antique Outboard Motor Club at www.aomci.org and ask
someone that really knows the old motors.

Thanks for adding what I forgot to add, aomci link, to my post Steel. I'd stick to 16:1 using modern TCW-3 oil. 24:1 would work, too, but 16:1 would be better for the bushings on that vintage outboard.

Check the model number to confirm that you have an engine built by Gale. If the model number begins with GG it was made by Gale, a division of OMC, and is nearly identical to the JohnnyRudes of the period.

In 1964, OMC changed the mix recommendation for all OMC built engines before that date to 24:1, using NMMA Certified TC-W oil (NOT SAE-30W).

Based on that, if yours really is a Gale engine, you should be able to use 24:1 with no worries.
