Hello folks.

First off Thank you so much for the good replies I've gotten on a couple of previous questions. I've got another one though.

I've only run this motor a few times and she's running fairly well and always starts with no problem. I've been running 24:1 fuel/oil mix. Like I said, she runs well but smokes A LOT ! I've been told be a couple of people that if I run a particular oil by OMC that I can cut it back to 50:1. This sounds like it might help with the smoking. But I'm concerned about burning up my mill.
Have any of you ever done this ? I know this may cost more for a better quality oil. That's not really a concern. My concern is with the amount of CRAP I'm putting into the environment every time I run her. If this is safe to do, I think I might try it. It makes a lot of sense that if I can burn HALF as much oil, that's HALF as much that I'll be dumping into the environment.

Thanks for any input.

John

Budster..... The 50/1 fuel/oil mixture (1pt of 50/1 oil to 6gal gas) will be fine with that engine. All of the bearings are either ball or needle bearings and are well suited for the 50/1 mixture. Also 87 octane fuel will be fine.

Thanks so much Joe !

I'm glad to hear that. I think it will really help the smoke/slick problem. I'd REALLY like to upgrade to a nice shiny new 4-stroke but that's just not in the budget right now. I know this is a 40+ year old motor. But it was my grandfathers and I know that it just doesn't have that many hours on it. A buddy of mine says that he feels it should have PLENTY of life left in it. (That's GOOD news after seeing what new motors cost :) ) Plus, I just think it looks cool on the water ! Whenever I'm out running around with it, I see a lot of people looking at it and such. I've had people come up and start talking to me about it. I think it's a very nice design.
