I have a 85 Jonhson 150,Took it out the last two weekends and heres what happens. Starts fine,Start to increase throttle up to half no problem ,run half throttle about half mile and it acts like i turn the key off and on real fast. It will do this a few times, then when I go toward full throttle it dies down and once completly quit, Starts fine and runs good the rest of the Day! Wide open ,,slow ect. Checked fuel lines ,,,wires! Had a 100 hour service about 20 hours ago if that ,,Help If you can ....Thanks

Re: Fuel Or Electrical??

Crawdaddy, Sounds like intermiittent ignition problem since the motor will run at WOT and midrange after initial episode.
Does your motor control have a lanyard kill switch? If so is it the type with the rubber cap that holds the button in ?
Check and insure all engine grounds are clean and tight.Look for any cracks or chafes on coil and plug leads.Inspect wiring on ignition switch terminals for corrosion or points that could arc.

Hi Crawdaddy,
Sure sounds like a fuel problem to me. Did it do this before you had the Water/Seperator installed at the 100 HR service? Did it ever run good after the Seperator was installed? Do you pump up the primer bulb before you start out for the day and if so, does it firm up and stay that way? I can't help but think there may be a glitch in the W/S. Try running a portable 6 Gallon tank with fresh pre-mix and a new fuel line and bulb, straight to the motor. That would take care of any problem you might have with Water in the fuel, the W/S,fuel lines and vent problem in one shot!

Re: Fuel Or Electrical??

Reason I asked is because they have a propensity to stretch out where button contacts them and will cause the very symptom you have.I had the rubber type on a 83' model and I ended up bypassing it.Omc has since changed to a fork type.
Next time your out if problem is not found to be something else and it begins to cut out, push in firmly on the kill switch and see if motor doesn't settle out.

Re: Fuel Or Electrical??

Good point OB, I was just thinking of the Water filter being installed recently as being an issue. He said it's acting like you're turning the key on and off real fast and that sounded to me like the feeling you get when you're running out of gas. I think the water in the fuel is a non-issue. I guess I would have to question why it would run great, after the initial problem, for the rest of the day if the button was bad. You would think it would do it all the time. Anyway, congrats on the Admiral status, as you've certainly earned it. Now if they can just put it into words!!

Heck, I'm just taking a shot Rick.It could very well be fuel related as well.Particularly since there has been a separator added recently. That darn kill switch of mine would cause the engine to start bucking and after I pushed in on it several times it would settle out.I quickly got tired of almost getting thrown from the rig and bypassed it.Ironically its there for safety "in case" you get thrown from boat.
P.S. What Admiral status?

I'm shooting in the dark, too! Just throwing ideas out there for thought. I have heard those switches can be a pain in the older models though. As for the Admiral deal, you're there! Just don't see it yet under your name. Of course, we were both there before Steve or whoever bonked us down. You should see it back there again tomorrow. But then again, does it really matter?? I think we're all just "Dock Boys" anyway!! NOT!!

Crawdaddy , I hope we were able to give you some food for thought as a possible simple remedy to your problem.Hopefully its not a powerpack trying to go out.
Rick, I don't know if I could handle looking at a higher rank than captain.Last rank I officially held was second class petty officer. :) and your right , that's not what I'm here for.

It's possible, however they are hit and miss to electrically check out if they are intermittently failing. Also , a very expensive part to change out on a guess.
