Fuel overflow vent

I think I may be getting water in the tank through the overflow. Are these things supposed to have checkvalves or baffles to prevent splashes from going into the tank? I recently filled up after having been out that day and noticed that water was spitting out of the overflow as soon as I started pumping fuel. I also had water in the separator that morning after the boat had been sitting for about 6 weeks.

Re: Fuel overflow vent

never seen a check valve on a vent and i install quite a few tanks. most systems are set up with a high "loop" where the vent goes thru the hull, this prevents that from happening. the vent hose going up a foot or so before it goes down to to the tank.

i would check to see if this has been altered maybe... they actually make a "U" fitting to install inline that is mounted above the vent for some of these systems..

Re: Fuel overflow vent

Attwood makes one with a set of internal baffels. My boat had them on it when I bought it but they were plastic and started to deteriorate, or actually the rubber washers behind them did, and so I replaced them with those damned stainless ones. Then for the next three years I've had constant water in fuel problems. I mean constant too. I have to clear my Racors (I have two of them for a single engined boat) before every single trip and sometimes during to tell the truth.

Anyway I tossed the stainless ones and bought another complete set of the Attwood ones. I think I got them from Surplus Unlimited but they are available all over the place. Here is a link to them at West Marine.

And they look like this:
