1970 50 hp merc....if i pull a skier, when i go from idle to full, the engine dies (50% of the time). Is there a fuel filter under the cover? There is a diaphram in the fuel line...looks clean. If i had a fuel leak would I see spilled fuel somewhere?

sound like either a dirty carb or the linc n sinc. betting on linc n sinc. click my name to get email add. request linc n sinc and decarb, flow the steps, has cured many a motor. i doubt the motor has never been decarbed, this cleans the guts of the engine, and increases performance. very simple process.

Id say fuel starvation. check your fittings from tank to carbs. Have someone pump the bulb when you floor it and see if this helps. If it doesnt die with someone pumping the bulb, its fuel and you need to check fittings, replace filters, maybe rebuild fuel pump.

welcome to E10 gas!
most likely you have water in the gas.
Mass has E10 ...10% Ethanol gas.
it will clean out your fuel system and deposit in your carb.
it also attracts water out of the air.
i was having simmilar issues.
i started adding a little seafoam to the gas and i added a water separating filter inline.

Before blaming E10 do some obvious checks. My bet is that you have other issues. When the engine bogs give the primer bulb a couple of quick squeezes. If it picks up you have a fuel delivery problem probably due to a weak fuel pump. Then there is lean carb adjustment, link & sync, spark and compression checks, all of which can be done cheaply. E10 "may" clean the fuel system if its dirty, it "may" absorb a little moisture in your area of the country, and it "may" send the crud toward the carbs but that crud "should" be trapped by the fuel filter.

The only reason i would blame e10 it its new to MASS a few months ago. i had many issues with fuel this year.
i have cleaned the carb twice , rebuilt the fuel pump, added a better filter b4 the carb, and recently found quite a bit of water in my new gas tank.
i have read quite a bit about e10 and it attracts alot of water on a non sealed gas tank.
another reason i would say water in the gas is the engine will burn a little water and i don't think the idle circuit pulls off the bottom of the float bowl but the main jets suck directly off the bottom (where water would accumulate)
I was thinking exactly the same as you when i started having issues and i was extremely surprised to see the water in there.
