Just pulled my lower end off a 1988 alpha one and changed out the sea pump.. Placed unit back on and started engine up to test pump to see if i did it right.. Checked forward and reverse then decided to let engine come up to temp and see if the thermostat was ok..After engine ( V6 ) ran for a bit ( 15-20 mins) it just died off.. Checked inline filter, cleaned it out and replaced it.. Took fuel line from tank to carb off and checked to see if i had any gas coming to the carb and found there was no flow.. Put gas in carb with sprayer and engine would fire until it went dry again... I'm guessing fuel pump, but was wondering if there was any kind of interlock i might have hit or set off while changing sea pump out.. This boat is a 1988 but only has 290 hours on it so i have a hard time believing the fuel pump has gone south unless maybe the diafram has dryed out.. Any idea's out there... ?

Re: Fuel problem

I don't have much experience with boats but I was a mechanic for a long time and engines and fuel are basically the same so heres my .02 cents. I would think if it had any type of interlock (not sure what that would be) or any reset it wouldn't have run for 15-20 minutes. I think you are on the right track thinking fuel pump. No fuel flow can only be a couple things, no electric to the fuel pump (fuse popped, wire issue) or fuel pump is bad. Not being a smart ***** but make sure it has fuel in it, theres been a few times where things wouldn't run only to find out the stupid thing was just out of fuel.

Re: Fuel problem

Thought the same thing ( ; lots of gas.. Will follow up on the wiring or fuse problem.. Not sure if it has a fuse or not.. Not even sure if its electrial or machincal pump.. Still new to this boating owning/fixing thing.. Thanks for the reply..

Re: Fuel problem

Check to make sure the tank vent is open. If it's blocked the fuel pump will gradually pull a harder and harder vacuum on the tank, to the point where it can't draw any more fuel. If you suspect the tank vent, as a test open the tank filler cap and see if it will keep running that way.

Re: Fuel problem

Tried that.. Took gas cap off thinking maybe it was vapour locked, to no avail..
