I wrote about the same problem a few days ago, and it got posted twice, so I deleted one of the posts and I think I deleted both by error.

I have a 3.3 Mercury, 2003 motor. Don't know the model number. The previous owner said it has 12 hours on it and I believe him as the motor looks like brand new! It starts up great, and I can rev it up good while in neutral. When I put her into gear, the more fuel I give it, the more I need to choke it too or will die. While WOT, the choke must be about 1/2 closed to keep the motor running great, and as I start slowing down, I need to open the choke as I back down on the throttle at the same time, or it will die. What is my problem?

Sound to me like you have a carb problem. I would install a carb kit in it after a good cleaning...

I would check you fuel filter, lines and fuel pump. It could be the carb as GM mentioned from gunk clogging things up. With out 12 hours on it you should be able to remove item with care, clean and reinstall

So it would be more than just an adjustment of the carb? What do you think of putting some seafoam in the gas and running it for awhile with that in it? Cant hurt to try it, right? I did not mention that it has its own gas tank built in on top of the motor, so no long hose or primer bulb to go bad either. Thanks for your input guys!

Seafoam won't hurt, but Seafoam is a long term maintenance item, meant to keep the fuel system clean.

It does not perform well on an already clogged carb.

Recommend disassemble and clean, then run your seafoam.

The Merc kicker on my boat was running like that when I bought it last spring,...

Before I decided to take it in or tear into the carbs by myself I ran a tank of Amsoil Quickshot threw it,....

Never did have to do anything else with it, Runs like a top now,..

NEVER before would have thought something like that was possible,.........

While I appreciate all of the input and/or suggestions, I think I will try this first and I am hoping for the best but expecting the worse. I can operate the motor as is, as long as I throttle the choke with the gas, however, there is no reason that I should have to "baby" this motor in that manner. I will try the additive first then I will remove the carb and tear into it. Thanks all!
