Hi:
Like many of you I am having trouble with my 2001 Mercury four-stroke 115. The motor that is part Yamaha. The motor is on a Lund Mr. Pike.
Several years ago I had the bogging down problem at WOT that I have read about. At that time I brought it into the dealer. $1200 later and they said it was fixed. But it wasn't. Another $700 and apparently the problem with a bad injector. I am reluctant to bring it into the dealer again -- at least until I have an idea what the problem is.
This time around the motor was working fine. Actually, that is not completely accurate. It didn't seem to have as much speed as it used to, but there was plenty of power for water activities. One day I was pulling my daughter water skiing. And the very next day it was the same problem as several years ago. Wide open I could not get more than 2600 rpm -- in fact it seemed locked on that rpm.
The problem only seems to happen under load. When I put the motor in neutral, I can rev it up as high as I want.
I have read about lots of things that it could be, but for the most part I try to think what could possibly have caused such a drastic, quick change.
I have not checked the spark plugs yet. I do not use the boat all that much, the current plugs are two years old. Could a fowled plug cause such a thing.
Cleaned the normal filter for the gas line. Actually just used my air hose to blow it off. Perhaps I should get a new filter. And is there a new 10 micron filter for this as well (not sure if I read this or not). There was no water in the bowl.
I am planning on getting a 10 micron in-line filter installed. The type that goes before the motor. Any recommendations on what type/brand I should get?
There was some treated gas in the tank from last year. I added about 18 gallons last spring. Not ethanol. I have not tried to run the motor with a separate tank.
I pulled the injectors and used an air hose to blow them off a bit. Not sure if they are all good. Am planning on sending them into be professionally cleaned.
I checked the oil level, and it is quite high -- perhaps 2 inches above the dash marks. Not sure what would have caused this.
I have read about the VST problems. Reluctant to get into this unless I am pretty sure that it might the problem. Seems like a pretty big project to get to the VST. By the way, any one know of instructions (perhaps even with photos)?
Ever since I bought the boat, and read about the alarms in the motor phamlet, I have been concerned. The manual states that the alarm will sound if there is a problem, but how do I know if the alarm is working. There has never been a sound when I turn the key. Should there be? I looked around the area under the ignition switch and could not see any sort of buzzer. Looked for a tan wire on the motor and didn't see any.
I am wondering if the high oil level tripped an alarm and the motor is running in some sort of safe mode. But since the alarm buzzer may not be hooked or even be in the boat, maybe I am just not hearing the warning. I know that I could simply drain the oil, put the injectors back in, and take it out on the lake. But I am wondering what others might think about this.
I am by no means an expert, but it just does not seem that a filter would cause such a drastic and immediate problem. And the fact that it seems looked on that one rpm -- about 2600. Just seems like it might be something else than a filter or spark plug.
Any help or suggestions or recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Rick
