my "2000" 130HP is hard starting at idle runs ruff, sometimes i need to leave in full choke until I am up on plane, after running well at mid to high throtle, the motor sputters and dies at low idle what do you think FUEL PUMP or something else could the idle mixture screws be to lean, causing it to run at mid to full but stall at idle or low RPM Thanks Bob

Re: fuel problems

COuld use some more details. Did this just start happening or did the boat sit for a while??

We will assume this is a Yamaha 130HP V4 two stroke outboard?

Hard starting, rough idle and needing choke to plane all points to dirty carburetors, particularly if its been sitting. If you don't have a fuel filter water separator and you run automotive pump gas with ethanol in it, you could have water/corrosion issues in carbs. Tilt your boat slightly up on the trailer, Disconnect your fuel line and pump fuel into a clear container and see what you get?

I suspect plugged pilot jets/pilot circuit in the carbs.

Have you confirmed good spark and compression?? If so pull the carbs and inspect. Inspect fuel system, fuel lines, filter, connections, primer ball, etc.

Re: fuel problems

the boat belongs to a friend and I just got some difrent info the carbs, & fuel pump were just rebuilt last year and this has been happening for about that time, I feel now what is happening is that if it runs good at the mid to wot range but stalls when trying to hole shot or apply gas from idle sounds to me as if the carbs when adjusted after being rebuilt were not adjusted properly the idle mixture screws need to be opened about a 1/4 turn more that hapen to me with another engine what do you think Thanks Bob

Re: fuel problems

Maybe if the idle mixture screws were all shut, but being a 1/4 turn off wouldn't create those symptoms.

He's been running it this way for a Year?? He accepted and paid for the work running this way??

Sounds like he needs to find a qualified mecahnic to go through carbs and fuel system again assuming you have spark and compression.

Re: fuel problems

I will do but like I said we had a 90hp inline merc once and after adjusting the carbs the engine ran mint at the dock in netural but put it in gear and take off and she stalled, enriched the idle screws a 1/4 turn open on each carb and she jumped up on plane with out stalling but that is a mercury now we have a yamaha and was wondering if the same problem and be whats wrong but we will ask a mecahnic you know its tuff to find good ones today every one says there it but there work dont show it and at 100.00 an hour its costly looking for that one Thanks Bob
