I have a 1972 merc 65 horsepower electric start outboard. My first question is about the fuel pump.I bought a rebuild kit and took off the housing and noticed there was only one check valve in place. It looks as though there are supposed to be two as there are 2 carbs,so somebody please 1 or 2 check valves and my 2nd question is one about correct timing.I recently put a new timing belt and was able to line the arrow on the distributor up with the line on the timing decal, but I could not figure out how to time the maximum spark advance. The numbers were .125 btdc or 23 degrees btdc, where do you stand with the light and what do you aim the light at,the manual says to aim at the mark on the decal, the problem I have is in addition to the belt aligning mark there is a dot punched in the decal at 23 degrees and 2 more dots about a half inch apart, does anyone know the correct way? Thank you all in advance for your time.

Re: fuel pump and timing questions

Re: Timing - On my 25 HP the reference mark is on the flywheel cover, which is secured to the motor with 3 bolts. This mark is on the right side near the pull cord. I connect timing light to # 1 plug wire and aim the light at the flywheel as motor is reved up; dots related to timing procedure show. You can find the timing procedure with the dots definitions in Merc Repair manuals at your local library. See my post dated May 21 under my user name "mcdgary," where I attempt to explain my timing procedure.
