fuel pump / deliver problem driving me crazy

1989 Evinrude 70hp

Ok, I bought this boat used about half a year ago. Ran good right at first, but then it started acting funny at WOT, it would run good very inconsistently, but always fine at idle all the way to about 70-80% or so of the throttle.

Then one trip after that, it wouldnt keep the bowls full...if I opened it up, it would die when the fuel was run out of the bowls...and the bulb would be soft and allow to fill them back up. It would then start right back up and do the same thing.

I pulled the VRO pump (which at the time was only used for a fuel pump), the oil side had been blocked long ago, and put a regular premix pump on from an 83 model 70hp. I bought it new though.

The day I bought that one, it looked like it has been sitting at the shop for years because the box was yellow aged and the fuel pump gasksets that hang out a little from the housing were hardened. Its the only one they had so I said oh well.

Put that on, and the motor ran like a champ when I took it out next and probably for the next 10 trips...no problems.

Well about a week ago, it started having the same symptoms as the earlier pump did, it wouldnt be able to provide enough gas for WOT...it would start to bog, but ran fine at idle all the way to about 70-80% of throttle. If my dad would sit back there and pump the bulb, we could run fine.

So I just thought it wore out since it was old when I bought it...I bought a new pump repair kit, BRP OEM replacement kit and rebuilt it.

Took it out just now and it still wont pump gas enough to run...I can run the engine until the bowls are empty and then it dies. It will idle forever, but when I put it in gear and go, the fuel pump isnt performing properly.

I dont know what to do...these pumps are pretty easy to rebuild, I will pull it back apart and recheck, but they are pretty straght forward on how they are put back together.

is there a way to check the pump with air or something to see if its performing right?

I know when I pump my bulb and that little plastic stem that works with the top spring on the pump stays in...when I pump the bulb, it comes out the back, but then goes back it. Is it supposed to be moving in unison?

Yes filter is fine...i will check the vent. Isnt it just that rubber hose from the tank to the vent hole?

thanks

yes it should have a cover (screen) on it, if not kritters love to live there and block the line. the pump cannot suck out of a vacuum.

Just checked...it does have a good screen and I disconnected it and blew up in it...no problems, it was clear.

What to suspect now? I dont have a pressure tester, but I took my time and made sure all connections were very snug and tight, and clamped.

Can I test the pump...it seemed like I read one time that if I blew in the intake it should be free, but shouldnt be able to blow from the outake?

does that sound right?

Driving me crazy becaue the motor runs damn good and the carb delivers the fuel inside the manifold, its just something is restricting the fuel getting to the carbs at a good enough pace.

Could a bad primer bulb cause this? I can go down the road and get a new bulb.

Portable tanks or permanenent? If you have snap coupler to engine or tank are o-rings new and lightly greased? Good chance for vacuum leak here.

Safe boating ya'll

Just depress the spring loaded seal to expose the small o-ring, and then you can remove it. I just use a little vaseline for lube and would put it on the male connector and face of o-ring on the new connector you install. How about the hoses, how are you clamping them?

yes its all clamped nicely...I wish I had a air compression reading of the lines. I would almost bet the plumbing is done perfect. Now yesterday I changed out the bulb and the connector to the motor (there isnt a connector to the tank).

I hope to lake test it this afternoon. If that fails, then I am going to double check rebuilding the fuel pump to make sure I did it right, but I am pretty sure I did.

thanks

When it runs out of fuel is the bulb flat? If so, check the anti-siphon valve. As a matter of fact, it'd be a good idea to check it anyway.

on a properly rebuilt fuel pump you should be able to blow into the fuel intake and feel it come out the outlet but not the reverse.

Re: fuel pump / deliver problem driving me crazy

damn, there was 1 gasket backwards that I put in with the kit. It didnt pass the test of blowing, and I thought that was the case, cause I used to do that test with the smaller fuel pumps.

Switched that gasket around and could blow in the intake, but not the out.

I havent lake tested it, but I am almost positive that was the problem the whole time.

Im an idiot...well at least fuel pump / air problems got discussed in detail.

thanks guys for another problem solved.
