Hey,

I have a 1975 Ted Williams 7.5hp. I need to know if the orange fuel pump element is supposed to have any type of slit or split in it?
I was having issues like the motor is starving for gas. I took the carb apart, I noticed the fuel pump element had a small horse shoe slit in it at the bottom. The slit looked too perfect to be a fault.
This is the first time I've been into an outboard motor before so I really have no idea.

before I did any work on the carb, I had been using it for about an hour non stop in the ocean. The only issue during that time was I had a small gas leak out of that little hole on the top of the carb.

I put the pump back at the 45 degrees just like it was when I took it out. I try to start the motor again, I have to same trouble, rund for a few seconds and dies. I took the pump out again and that perfect horse shoe slit is now a split right down the the entire element.

there shouldn't be any tears or slits in this piece of rubber?

thanks

Your pump element is bad. The only hole that should be in it is at the large end at the edge of the carborater. If you havent already done so you should join the Eska group. You will get lots of good info there plus lots of links to parts and such

bjbmedic is correct i had the same problem on mine and i chased it for months until i learned about that stupid orange piece. my pump element had a perfect oval that had formed to make it 2 perfectly sized sections that i also thought had to be done at the factory. mr crabs pointed out that little device to me and its been running great eversince. the part number is 630953 and you should be able to get it at sears parts direct or cpc, as they took over making most of theparts for tecumseh when tecumseh went under a few years back. try your local marinas and worst case scenario part number 49-239 at oregon will have it.good luck

Thanks for info everyone. I have a complete carb kit ordered from www.boatsportandtackle.com. Figured it wouldn't hurt to have, just ordered it on Friday. Shipping to Canada not sure how long it will take.

I was surprised that there was any damage to it. I don't really understand carbs but what forces are generated within a carb to damage parts?

It isn't really handling much force, I don't think - Those rubber things just go to crap after a while. They can be really sneaky, too. They can develop a split that you can't see with a magnifying glass. When I inspect one of those little buggers, I pinch it lightly between forefinger and thumb, and roll it while looking at it under a magnifying glass.

if installed correctly you can put your finger over the fuel pump element and hole and blow/suck??? can't remember) on the fuel inlet and the combined componets of flapper valve and element will make a healty fluttering sound....dang near a musical instrument :D

install the new elemnets slot to point to the 2 & 8 Oclock position or 45 degrees as you look at the back of the carb.
