I have a 1971 55hp Chrysler. Model 557HC serial 3188. The parts manual show Diaphram on top of Gasket. Someone told me the gasket goes on top of diaphram. The old one seemed to have a gasket on top and underneath. Where does the gasket go? Above or below Diaphram?

Re: Fuel pump Gasket where

The gasket always goes to the pressure/vacuum port side of the fuel pump--that is, the side without the valves. SO: on pumps built into the bypass cover the gasket goes on the cover side first then the diaphragm on top of it. On pumps with a glass fuel bowl, the gasket goes on top of the diaphragm next to the pump half that does not have the glass bowl and has the two pressure/vacuum hoses connected to it.

SO: on one pump it lLOOKS like it is on top of the diaphragm and on the other it LOOKS like it is below the diaphragm--it's just a question of orientation.

Thanks Frank, I knew you'd be there to rescue me. Thats what it looked like when I removed. But you could see someone had put another gasket under. It was stuck to the side of the valves. Which I cleaned off. Then you could see the gasket on top of the diaphragm, which came off cleanly from the top plate where the vacuum hoses are.. Anyway I understand. I have the glass bowl with the vacuum hoses attached to the opposite side of the glass fuel bowl. So diaphragm, then gasket on top, then top plate where vacuum hoses are. Thank again.
