I'm replacing the fuel pump in my Mercruiser 350 Chev. I have the old one off and am ready to install the new pump. I can't seem to get that rod pushed up so I can insert the new pump. It doesn't move, I've tried my smallest screw driver and the end of the hack saw blade and needle nose pliers. Nothing seems to work. Any ideas on how I can push it up? Thanks. Mark

You will have to pull the plate off where the fuel pump mounts up. There are (2) 1/4" bolts holding it on. There is a 3/8 bolt on the front side of the block. Remove that and find a longer bolt or you can use a small screwdriver. Push the fuel pump shaft up in and very very lightly tighten the longer bolt or use the screwdriver to hold the rod in place while you reinstall the cover and pump. Replace the short 3/8 bolt in the front and you will be good to go.

The pump arm will compress as it is installed because there is constant contact between the arm, rod and cam lobe. Don't forget to clean off your mounting points and use a sealer like Perfect Seal between the gaskets and the hard parts.

+1 with NHGuy and will add, if you bump the starter or hand crank the the engine around a bit more the rod can be retracted further. Sounds like your engine stopped right at maximum extension for the rod.
