fuel pump interchangeability

I have a 1966 OMC 120hp. I understand these engines to be Chevy II's. 153 cid. The original fuel pump lists for roughly $150. Can I get the automotive application since this is based on a Chevy engine? The automotive one lists for $25.00. It' s mechanical and bolts right to the block. Like so many others I am on a tight budget. THe electric fuel pump someone hooked up works fine but I wonder if the pressure is not good for the carb needles when the boat is just idling not needing much fuel. Need some words of wisdom and this is the site to find it!

Re: fuel pump interchangeability

Auto pump fills bilge with fuel in certain failure scenarios and blows the boat to smithereens a marine pump routes the excess fuel via a hose into the carb's air horn and floods the motor out thus saving your day.

US Coast Guard and Johnny Law mandate you only use the marine spec. pump.
I just gave $125 for the pump you need, it was an aftermarket sierra brand pump and all 3 1/8" NPT ports were undersize and mickey mouse, very disappointed. Avoid ! Avoid !

Re: fuel pump interchangeability

I still have the original one bolted to the side of the block. Do they sell a rebuild kit for that to avoid purchasing it complete? That would save me a bundle. THe way it is set up now the electric fuel pump is hanging right next to the engine. After reading a few warnings about electric fuel pumps I am scared to run it. I only took it out for about 10min since I have owned it!

Would love to just rebuild the original mechanical pump!

The electric pump is fine as long as you run it through an oil pressure switch. If you don't, its also dangerous.

Re: fuel pump interchangeability

I appreciate the comments...the next question I have is should I re-mount the electric fuel pump close to the tank under the dash...seems to work fine where it is but maybe safer near the tank. Where do I find an oil pressure safety switch thats bolts right to my block without modifcation and also does it still operate the oil light in my dash?

Work Work Work...gratifying work!
