Re: Fuel Pump Kit

I tried taking out the "BUTTONS" but they don't come out.
One has a screw that looks like it holding it in,but when i take out the screw the button just spins.
And they cant be press out because you would need to be able to get at it from both sides.

Re: Fuel Pump Kit

Those are exactly what jnk111 has described. They are the gaskets that go underneath each check valve in the pump.

Re: Fuel Pump Kit

There was another post on here about that very thing.

I belive he used a screw driver to pry the old ones out to change them.

If your lucky the check valves are still ok to use, mine were.

I changed the diaf. and it ran great after that.

Re: Fuel Pump Kit

The check valve that is held in by the screw should come out easy. The other two are press fit and are tough to get out without damage. If this is a 18-7806 rebuild kit I doubt those gaskets will fit the check valves anyways. I tried to replace mine and they are the wrong size if you try and stretch them over the seats they bust. I had to order the correct ones from Mercury. If you decide to replace the check valves and gaskets the parts are on the mercrusiser or bam site. They are like 5 bucks for the check valves and half a buck for the correct gaskets.

Re: Fuel Pump Kit

While we are on the subject, I replaced my diaphram only yesterday and have not fired it up yet. My question, does the diaphram have to be exactly centered on spring? Mine ended up a little crooked due to having to pull the putty knife out after re-assembly. Should I be ok?

It has been a few years but I dont recall a spring in the fuel pump or the need for a putty knife to install a gasket. Seems to me you just line up the bolt holes and put it back together. If you are able to get the screws back in without damaging the diaphragm it should be okay

There is a spring under the diaphram with a small flat disc on the top of the spring, that goes against the diapram. It is a bugger to put together, but I found starting all the bolts thru the assembly, and leaving the back 2 bolts & nuts loose, till everthing is in place, holds it all together when installing.

Re: Fuel Pump Kit

Yes there's a spring. The manual says use a flat tool (putty knife) to hold down the spring and flat disc. I could only get the two screws on one end tight while holding the other end tightly with my other hand. Then slowly pull the putty knife out, then install on engine block and put the other four bolts in. What I should have done was insert the putty knife straight across instead of on an angle as when I pulled it out, the diaphram got slightly off center. But will see if it really matters whenever I can get a day off from work and try it out. Weather still beautiful here in SW Virginia..
